Can both an E8 and FoUSB plug into the same board?
Up to FoUSB

What is wrong with plugging a FoUSB into an E8 header?
It probably depends on which part you are using, but I have been using a FoUSB connected to the 14 pin header of a M16C/28 without any problems. I did have to make my own adapter cable though.
There are no problems to connect E8 to an FoUSB-board or to connect FoUSB to an E8-board as long as the software supports the processor. Both use exactly the same signals because these are defined by the boot loader for flash programming of the device. Both FoUSB and E8 use the pre-programmed boot loader for software download and a clock synchronous serial interface.
I'm using both and have no problems (but some special cables to do so). There are also some few boards which have both a 10-pin connector for FoUSB and a 14-pin connector for E8.
I am trying to utilize the E8 in a set up that previously used the old FoUSB programmer. I created a cable adaptor, but when I launch KD30, I get an error that it cannot connect with the target.
I looked into using the installation CD, but I am worried that it wants to overwrite my existing software (HEW, KD, etc.)
What do I need to do?
Hi Calvin,
We met at DevCon, and I wanted to come back and talk to you about this, but everything was torn down (too early in my opinion).
Anyway, we already use HEW and are at 4.04 or so; the E8's installation disk wants to install 4.0 and we don't want to go backwards.
We have been using KD30 for >4 years and are quite comfortable with it. Are you saying in order to use the E8, we need to abandon KD30 and use the HEW's internal debugger? Would we lose any capabilities? Is there a transition process/paper giving us hints on what's necessary?
Thanks!
-Mike

KD30 doesn't support E8. You should download HEW and use it, since it will create a M16C Debugging project for you - you just need to specify where the .x30 file is located.
All HEW installers check to see if there's a newer version already installed. Don't worry about going backward. You might even get an option to uncheck the HEW portion before the actual process starts.
FoUSB and E8 have very similar capabilities. I'd suggest moving to the E8 when you need to (or want to), otherwise stick to the FoUSB - since you've probably already understood the underpinnings.
I hope you liked the DevCon! It was amazing to see it all come together so well.
I'm trying to use the E8 from within HEW, and am running into some difficulties. I am getting an error when trying to "connect" to it - it's asking for an ID code. I have no idea what that means.
edit: Actually, I have been able to use the menu items under "Device" within HEW. I seemed to successfully download new firmware to my target. I am trying, now, to use the Debug menu and that's where HEW shows me that Dialog box asking for an ID code.
