I personally like HEW better, but I do not change architectures.

Here are some things to consider:

Changing Architectures (OEMS):
IAR can support multiple OEMs/HEW cannot

Compiler Efficiency:
HEW is better in H8 and SH, but IAR may be better today in M16C

Debug Support:
HEW supports ALL Renesas Debuggers. IAR has been working to
support more of them, but you should check with IAR to make sure your
proposed debugger is supported before selecting.

IAR makes their money in their development environment, Renesas in their
chips. I would hope that IAR's tech support on their software would be
better, but when it comes to knowing what is a software problem and what
is a hardware problem, probably Renesas HEW is better.

Cost wise they are fairly similar.

Good luck

Another comment I had regarding this question was:

"IAR is an Alliance Partner with Renesas. In fact, in both Europe and
America, they are listed as a Gold partner. IAR has worked closely with
Renesas in the development of Renesas evaluation boards in the past and
are an active partner in the Americas Seminar Series. From all of the
different partnerships between Renesas and IAR, I would think IAR is the
better choice. But,...."
