USB Rom-monitor "Failed to open communication"

Posted by Jeff Bialozor at October 30. 2008

I just started to play with my SubAtomic from the ESC in Boston; got IAR installed, driver installed (shows as "Renesas E-series USB Driver" in Device Mgr), board connected and playing the pre-installed demo loop (with "don't plug in the board in until asked" audio playing).

I set the target device type (M30260F8A) and debugger type (E8), performed a "Rebuild All" and clicked the C-Spy button. It connected with the SubAtomic board, prompted me that updated firmware was available, which I selected.

I was next prompted for how to power the device (akin to external, internal 3.3V, or internal 5V). With "external" or "internal 5V" a dialog stating something along the lines of "no device found" was the result.

Choosing "internal 3.3V" made the process continue, but seems to have hung the SubAtomic board.

Out of the box, the demo loop had solid Orange & Green lights and alternating Red & Amber. After allowing the firmware update, the audio loop quit, the leds went to just dim Orange and dim Green.

Attempting to connect via IAR now just results in a "Fatal Error: Failed to open communication" error.

Any thoughts on how to kick this board back to life?

Hello Jeff,

I just want to be clear so I can properly assist you.  The problem you are having is concerning the IAR CD that came with the kit.  If this is the case, which it appears to be,  I will have an IAR person reply to you in order to help you.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff Waldman
